Quick 2 Listen/ Slow 2 Speak/ Slow 2 Become Angry :)

Good Morning Friends,

Guess what?? We’re going to be adding a few video clips from my recent teaching “30+ Thoughts on Effective Evangelism.” Look for these clips on this blog site over the next few days!

Today’s thought deals with the subject of self control and learning to ENTRUST our lives into the loving hands of God in all life’s circumstances. Too often, we take matters into our own hands and really make a mess of things! Maybe this blog will help…

James 1:19-20 “My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.”

Quick to listen… Slow to speak

  • Because things are not usually as they first appear… don’t speak from misinformation.
  • Listening is an act of respecting others… and a sure sign of wisdom.
  • Wise people use less words and last words.
  • Being the last person to speak positions you to be the most informed speaker.
  • When possible, always talk to God before responding to people.
  • When speaking in your own defense, don’t speak unless prompted by the Holy Spirit.
  • Even perfect words can be misinterpreted… many times; silence is more powerful than a mighty argument.
  • Silence gives God a chance to do the impossible.

Slow to become angry

  • Anger is a manifestation of fear.
  • Fear is an antonym for faith.
  • Anger is mans way of responding to adverse circumstances in his humanity.
  • Anger is not a God approved method for handling adverse circumstances.
  • Victory obtained through anger is not really a victory.
  • Anger manipulates people and circumstances… and never brings the kind of lasting victory God has for his children.

A person who is quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry… is a person who has learned to trust that God is bigger than people… and that life works out best when left in God’s hands. God loves, God is merciful, God is just… and God is ABLE to work ALL THINGS OUT FOR OUR GOOD AND HIS GLORY!

Today’s blog is written from a lifetime of painful experience… it’s comes from the chronicles of this bloggers decades at the school of hard knocks! I pray it adds tremendous value to your amazing lives! We love you and we thank God for you… tootaloo!

  1. Amen. We need to realize that the faith we have is a gift from God, so that we have nothing to boast in of ourselves. In today's postmodern world, we need to approach the unbeliever with a "humble boldness", with a mind consecrated to Christ and a willingness to challenge the non-believers worldview. Apologetics and Evangelism must go hand in hand.

Speaking of which, pray for Eric the atheist as I dialogue with him on my blog. (See Comments in this post.) Only the Holy Spirit can give Him new life.

  2. I TOO TEND TO SUFFER FROM THE FATAL "HOOF AND MOUTH " SYNDROME..I NEED T0 REPEAT OVER AND OVER..PRAYER 1ST AND UTMOST: THEN SPEAK OUTLOUD,,(ONLY EVERY NOW AND THEN OF COURSE),THANKS FOR THE AWESOME WORD FOR THE DAY.KEEP ME ACCOUNTABLE IS THE LORDS HARDEST CHALLENGE ..IF WE ALL ATTEMPT TO ACT IN FAITH AND HE WILL RECIEVE ALL THE GLORY AND PRAISE–PAMALAMADINGDONG MYERS

  3. Great blog! Keep up the excellent work!

The world would be a much more pleasant place if only this advice could be followed by everyone. These days it seems everyone is in too much of a hurry to actually listen to what others say and think before they respond. I am guilty of this at times just because I am rushed, but God is helping me work on this.

  4. I so needed this today. Yesterday was a rough day at work and I asked God last night if my words and attitude were pleasing, or if I needed to ask for forgiveness. I had to ask a partner for forgiveness and he accepted my apology, but I needed to be sure that my actions and responses were from the Lord. God has been working on me in this respect as well and although sometimes it is very painful, it is worth it. I pray every morning for the Lord to keep my mouth SHUT if I am not to speak during the day and if my mouth does open that my words ONLY BE FROM HIM and that my attitude in everything be CHRIST-LIKE. It is amazing how much better my day seems to go when I pray this simple prayer. God is amazing and wonderful in the little things as well and always seems to work in and through me when I say this small prayer. Thank you for this awesome reminder!

Love living for Christ and becoming “more Christ-like” every day!

  5. Perfect timing, getting ready to do a road trip w first time meetings and so need to follow this in those gatherings. Need His leading / instruction on how to handle some situations w/ out any drama. be blessed…

  6. I pray that we each digest this word and learn to be quiet when needed, listen when needed, and responded when needed.

  7. This is such excellent teaching! I can put this into practice every day. It reminds me of Proverbs 17:28 “Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.” Personally I find this so hard to do, especially if I feel that I someone I care about has been slandered or been gossiped about.

  8. This is very good advice and teaching!

I was also taught SILENT and LISTEN have the same letters. Makes me think anyway that some things should be pondered in the heart and that we should listen not only with our ears but with our heart to others.

  9. I teach 3rd Grade. I love it because it is such a challenge for them. I love helping them deal with the state tests. I have super students, but they do have their moments.
