Behavioral Transformation :)

Good Wednesday Friends!

I’ve been thinking so much lately about what drives people to take certain inevitable courses of action. I’m talking about the programing behind the things we do over and over again. You see, I believe that nearly every human action can be traced back to a preset behavior. Understanding this allows us to feel compassion rather than rage towards the people who mistreat us.

There is a cause behind every effect. That nasty waitress on Friday night was only nasty because she just got evicted from her apartment before coming in to work that day… or she just found out her dad has cancer and only 6 months to live… or the father of her child is leaving her for another woman!

This waitress, now being under more stress than she can bare, while trying to serve you and your friends… she handles stress the way she has been programmed to handle her stress. Her current adverse circumstance triggers a preprogrammed pattern of behavior… and the result is the nastiest waitress of your entire life. Believe me, if you think you are miserable… you should imagine what she must be feeling!

As written in the blog, Identity Transformation – A Message From Jail, I believe that some people in this world clearly have a much more difficult time SHEDDING OFF THEIR DESTRUCTIVE PATTERNS. They are programmed for failure… and even though they feel warm and fuzzy at times over the DREAM of changing their ways… the program always knocks them back down. They are simply living the way they were programmed to live… UNTIL they are reprogrammed to live differently!

A habit is a behavior pattern acquired by FREQUENT REPETITION or PHYSIOLOGICAL EXPOSURE that shows itself in regularity or increased facility of performance. It is AN ACQUIRED MODE OF BEHAVIOR that has become nearly or completely involuntary.

HABITS are first cobwebs, then cables! –Spanish Proverb

A HABIT cannot be tossed out the window; it must be coaxed down the stairs a step at a time. –Mark Twain

Bad HABITS are like comfortable beds… easy to get into, but hard to get out of. –Anonymous

HABIT is either the best of servants or the worst of masters. –Nathaniel Emmons

Most humans at least try to act differently than they are programmed… many times a day. We want to change because we KNOW that so many of our habits are leading us far, far away from our dreams. We know that unless we change, we will never experience life as we can and should!

Everyone CAN change! God offers us many promises for behavioral transformation. Here are two…

  1. We can be transformed by the renewing of our minds. (Romans 12:1-3)  This is where we take the amazing teachings of the Bible and we program them into our minds! And so, instead of thinking and acting the way some other flawed human has programmed us to think and act, we challenge these inherited thoughts and actions… we replace them with a far better program.
  2. We can live under the influence God’s Spirit and live in the state of knowing rather than a state of thinking. God is perfect and all his actions are always perfect. He promises that we can learn to walk under his influence all the time! The fruits of Gods Spirit are: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control! (Galatians 5:22-23) These are not learned behaviors… they are the qualities of living in the NOW of Gods Spirit! We can act and react like God does because he is acting and reacting through us!

Both of these promises require FAITH and corresponding ACTION. One must believe that God is able to HELP messed up people through the process of replacing their OLD DESTRUCTIVE habits with NEW and far more CONSTRUCTIVE ones… and that God is able to bring each of us into a state of living in the NOW of Gods Spirit.

The only other option is to forget about all this talk of transformation and just keep moving in the direction of our current habits… and that is a scary thought for most of us. So, go away from todays blog with more compassion for the people out there doing crazy things, realizing that they really CANT HELP IT… and have the courage to enter into the process of reprogramming for a beautiful future filled with amazing actions!

Have a super day everyone!

  1. Behaviors are learned, but sin is not. We need to have a new birth before any meaningful bahavioral transfornation can take place. The real cause of sinful behavior is the sinful nature that we have from conception. It is a nature that we struggle with even as Christians. What separates us from the non-Christian is that for the non-Christian, there is no struggle, for there is only one nature for them that needs to be indulged.

The solution is #1, you must be born again, and #2, move from glory to glory as the Spirit transforms our loves.

Here are a couple of puritan gems on that subject.

"Sin in a wicked man is like poison in a serpent; it is in its natural place." – THOMAS BROOKS

"Let no man think to kill sin with few, easy, or gentle strokes. He who hath once smitten a serpent, if he follow not on his blow until it be slain, may repent that ever he began the quarrel. And so he who undertakes to deal with sin, and pursues it not constantly to the death." – JOHN OWEN

"When sin is your burden, Christ will be your delight." – THOMAS WATSON

  2. Very good additions to this blog Puritan Lad… again I was writing from the assumption that my readers are already walking in relationship with God. Therefore, my thoughts are spoken concerning the post salvation work of grace whereby we "move from glory to glory as the Spirit transforms our lives." I was merely shining a light on the process of this transformation as we yield ourselves to God's Spirit.

Very good thoughts! Thank you for sharing! And have a most outstanding day my dear lad! 🙂

  3. WOW!! and WOW again !! This blog today speaks my thoughts and what is in my heart for people. The most amazing part is that Bo and I were just talking about all this yesterday. Actually, it really does not shock me all that much, its just more of a confirmation from God keeping us on track with what He has called us to in life and how He has aligned us with you. Not that we have ANY doubts at ALL because we KNOW but to read your thoughts and KNOW what God is placing before us too is pretty awesome.

There is a doctor by the name of Carolyn Leaf and she travels and does lectures on the medical side of transformation and renewing of the brain. She has been on TV with Joyce Meyers and several other Christian network stations. You have to look her up on you tube, google, etc. She has several books too. The one I have is Who Switched off my brain. Its really good in explaining the negative thoughts and the positive thoughts and how they effect us.

  4. When I first read the blog I skipped over the link for the Idenity Transformation blog but Vickie redirected me to it and knowing my situation you can imagine the tears that fell. I can identify with the experiences of being beaten into a mold someone wants us to be in but know the victory of breaking that mold with God as my hammer. I heard recently a lil saying that really hit home and I continually remind myself of it. "IF NOTHING CHANGES, NOTHING CHANGES".

If think about it it makes so much sense. If you continue to do the same thing over and over again you are going to get the same results. But if you make changes even if you start with small changes you are going to get a different result. One step that will make a tremendous difference is being prayfull in everything you do, put it all in God's hands and WOW what a difference. Thanks Chuck for and excellent blog, as usual, and thank you Vickie for redirecting me.

  5. Lisa,
Breaking free from that mold (the old identity)and coming through as a new creation as the bible says 2 Corinthians 5:17 (New Living Translation)

17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

You have left that "old life" behind and all the negative thoughts, feelings and attachments that came along with it. I am sure some parts of the old life can't be dumped off along the side of the road never to be thought of again. It's those thoughts, feelings and emotions that need replaced and repaired with Positive thoughts, forgiveness, total renovation.

    Phil 4:6
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. 9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.

You are so right about what you said too about doing the same thing over and over and expecting something different. That is the definition of insanity. To make a change a person must first set in their own mind that they want a change. Once that is established, help is available for them and they are on the right path.

Hang in there! You are surrounded by a group of people who love and support you and will do all we can to help you stay on track so you in turn can also lead others to the right path. God has a call for you that only YOU can answer !

    • Good stuff Vickie… great sub message there… Phil 4:6-9 REALLY speaks to me this morning… so THANK YOU for writing that! Lisa… you have come a LONG way in a very short time. Keep pushing your roots deeper and deeper into the soil and when the summer comes, you wont fear for the long days of heat. 🙂

  6. Thank YOU Pastor for responding to our bloggage on your site:)

It makes me feel very good to know I wrote something that actually spoke to you being that you ALWAYS day after day pour yourself into this blog for ME!!

I know, it's not just for me. Its for the many others too that read this blog daily.

You do so much for so many and if I could return the expression of God's love back to you that you so freely give to all that is within your circle of influence I surely would with every opportunity God makes available to me.

Pastor Chuck, You are an amazing Man of God! You preach the truth. You hear God's voice and we that sit under your teaching KNOW that. God is with you always and I know you know that too.

I recently finished up a bible study on the Patriarchs and it's just like God to speak to me about Joseph and detours in life at this moment in time accenting on the verse Gen 50:20.

Today, I am feeling much heaviness and was feeling a spirit of rejection (although I didn't know why). God has called me to be an intercessor, that I know and I will be praying all day until this lifts.

Again, THNAK YOU for all you do! If I can help you with anything, please let me know. I am praying for you.

  7. At work I deal with a few women who almost always react negatively to others. I find myself saying be nice all the time. It is funny to me because they stop talking and just stare at me. They can't believe that I don't get upset like them. Yesterday, I caught one of them saying something bad about another teacher just for the sake of it and I looked right at her and said I am praying for you. She looked at me and said I need it. I don't get gossip and I don't get rude comments. I always tell teachers would you want your students to act like this.
