1 Peter 5:8-11 (The Message Bible) Keep a COOL head. Stay alert. The Devil is poised to pounce, and would like nothing better than to catch you napping. Keep your guard up. You’re not the only ones plunged into these hard times. It’s the same with Christians all over the world. So keep a firm grip on the faith. The suffering won’t last forever. It won’t be long before this generous God who has great plans for us in Christ-eternal and glorious plans they are!-will have you put together and on your feet for good. He gets the last word; yes, he does.
People do crazy things when under PRESSURE. In todays world, it seems like more and more kind and level headed people are: breaking down, flipping out, falling to pieces, calling up their lawyers, throwing up their fists… snapping, pushing, punching, pinching, scratching… pulling hair, biting ears, spitting in faces… yelling, groaning, pouting and crying.
One of the great keys to success is being able to keep a cool head in fiery moments. Life is not always easy… it’s not usually easy. The happiest people are the ones who weather their storms the best!
Pressures come in so many forms: financial, relational, career, internal mind-battles, accidents, illnesses, set-backs, betrayals, emergencies, crowded schedules, spiritual warfare…
Sometimes, our pressures can be so intense that we lose our love… joy… peace… patience… kindness… goodness… faithfulness… gentleness… and self-control. Should the pressure last long enough, we may end up forfeiting a lifetime of character, fellowship with God, compassion for people, and our desire to make a positive difference in this world. If we’re not careful, the trials of life will smack us off our firm stance of faith… and we will SNAP BIG TIME, only making our situations far worse!

I think this must be what Peter is trying to warn us about… he says, “KEEP A COOL HEAD… STAY ALERT”… because the devil would love nothing better than to catch you spiritually off your game! He would love to see all your cool go out the window… for your guard to drop… and then BAM, POW, WAP… and down you go!
Peter gives us a phenomenal set of tips for dealing with intense pressures…
- Know that you are not the ONLY person under pressure!
- Don’t turn your back on God… keep a FIRM GRIP on your FAITH!
- Convince yourself that this suffering is TEMPORARY… it will not last forever… there IS light at the end of this long dark tunnel!
- Focus on Gods generosity… spend some time building your concept of God… see him as he REALLY is!
- Realize that God still has GREAT PLANS for your life… eternal and glorious plans!
- Believe that God WILL have you put back together… and back on your feet for GOOD!
- Don’t forget that God always gets the last word… and your best is STILL TO COME!
