Will You Be The Doctor?

Happy Tuesday!

If you read yesterdays blog, then you know about the passing of my dear friend, Pastor Glenden Berg. Yesterday afternoon, I was contacted by Carolyn Berg (Glenden’s wife) about doing the service… and I proudly accepted her invitation. Please pray for me, that I will perfectly memorialize the life of this special man. The funeral service is on Thursday, July 1, at 1pm… at the Moorefield WVA Church of God. For more info, you can go to the Shaffer Funeral Home website.

Will You Be The Doctor?

Luke 5:27-32

Later, as Jesus left the town, he saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at his tax collector’s booth. Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him.

So Levi got up, left everything, and followed him.

Later, Levi held a banquet in his home with Jesus as the guest of honor.

Many of Levi’s fellow tax collectors and other guests also ate with them.

But the Pharisees and their teachers of religious law complained bitterly to Jesus’ disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with such scum?”

Jesus answered them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.”

As a Jewish tax collector, Levi was considered the scum of the earth. He was employed by the Roman government to collect taxes from his own people… and as a perk of this heartless job, Jewish tax collectors were allowed to collect more than Rome required and keep the extra for themselves. These tax collectors were betrayers and thieves of their own people. They were hated by pretty much everyone.

So, it isn’t surprising that everyone reacted as they did when Jesus invited this low life to follow him (especially as one of his infamous 12 disciples). Levi left everything to accept this invitation from Jesus… a sign that he recognized his need for change and he was finished with his sinful life. The banquet Matthew held in Jesus honor is further evidence of my claim.

Matthew was a grateful man! He was obviously transformed by love and mercy he was shown! At the banquet, Matthew hosted his fellow tax collectors and other guests… a crowd of people who were utterly despised by the teachers of the religious law.

So, the religious leaders complained bitterly to Jesus saying, “Why do you eat and drink with such scum?”

And Jesus shocked them with His perfect reply, just as He still shocks so many people in todays society. Jesus said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.”

How true this is! And yet, for some reason, we still try to spend our lives as far away from sick people as we can get. This fallen world is crying for a doctor, the sick people are everywhere.

Today, I’m praying for the 21st century Christian Church… that we will catch a heart for the sickest people (a heart just like Jesus had for them)… that we will run to the lowliest places of our world… that we will invite the scum of the earth to our special banquets… that we will lay our lives down, to heal them, just like Jesus modeled this for us.

No wonder we call Jesus, the Great Physician! This He is!

  1. A friend and I were just on this topic the other day. We got into an elevated discussion about the church today and how many people "don't want to get their hands dirty." I personally feel that everyone has a part to play in helping the “scum” of this world. I know I have mentioned "Love Revolution," by Joyce Meyer before, but I thought before I began reading it that I loved people with Christ's love! Now I want to do more than ever to make sure the love of God is all over me!! I know that what I was doing was not enough. This book has radically changed the way I feel about love and what we need to do with the love God has entrusted in us!

Please don't get me wrong I am not saying everyone is called to be out on the streets literally pulling people up out of the gutters. What I am saying is that we all have a part to play in it. Some of us are meant to be the prayer warriors, some to be the financial support, and some to be out there physically doing the work. Each part is important to make sure people are being set Free and receiving their ultimate healing!! These days so many want to bury their heads and just stay within the "safe" 4 walls of the church building. This is NOT what we are called to do!! We all need to think of the world outside the church. I personally want to be doing whatever God asks me to do without hesitation!!

As I attended Destiny Family Center, have helped out with Teen Challenge and Freedom Outreach I can honestly say one of the greatest things to be able to do is hear the testimonies of the drug attics and alcoholics as they talk about finding Jesus Christ and accepting Him as their Lord and Savior!! I pray that God will continue to use me in the days ahead to help many others of the sick in finding their Ultimate Healing in Jesus!! I pray that God will rock the 21st century Christian Church and that we all will do our part to see the world changed!! (Sorry it's so long, this is something I feel very strongly about!) Love you all and have a very blessed day!

  2. I'm so glad God didn't just want to hang out with the 'high rollers', he loves the underdogs just as much 🙂

  3. I have met some amazing women on myspace who've been changed by the light shown by their fellow friend…..she was a prostitute and now she is in ministry to reach to the ends of the earth to help women become free in Christ. Today's blog reminded me of her.

As an educator I get disgusted by other educators who don't want anything to do with the undesirable children. I have a huge heart for them and today's blog made me realize how important it is for me to take the tests to get special education on my teaching license so I can by the grace of God help these children and for them to see Jesus. Thank you so much!!!! Wow, I am freed from the anxiety of it all and the fear of not passing the tests and not being able to do the paperwork. I love you Lord and I bow down at your feet right now and Thank you for using others to help me see your purpose for me as an educator!!!!!

  4. Chuck, I am praying for you to have strength and courage when delivering your friend's funeral. You will do well my friend.

  5. So sorry for your loss,The sorrow of the Faithful is not that of permanent loss, but the tender sense of sadness that comes in saying good-bye for now to someone we love. May today's sorrow give way to the peace and comfort of God's love. Thinking of you in Christian love, Sandy

  6. last night i was preparing a short notes for today's prayer meeting; we as a church actually takes "outreach" or evangelism is our main job, besides ministries and fathering this generation. I once sitting in a Conference and i heard a preacher said "that our life is like a lifeboat" – that we need to stretch out and not to shrink in. Last night i said "yes" i said "amen" to that statement. And i believe those are not just an empty statement, its the heart of God lays and lived in those words that bumped me once again.

Yes, im willing and im giving myself to be a doctor, to save people as long as God is in me, as long as His spirit is within me .. Today lets be moved with a compassion to the lost soul; Just like Jesus – Where ever He goes, He always moved with Compassion, then Miracles happens. Lets walk out and watch our surrounding are so full with the lost people, the world are full with a "sick" people. We have the answer, and all we need to do is to "stretch out"

I missed this blog .. SO BAD! last week was one of the most hectic week for me. We held a "youth conference" while my husband laid in bed for bed rest because of a liver infection. I've read all the blog that i'd missed, and its just what i need to do to start my working week again. I feel EXCITED! I feel like exploding..

Ps Chuck, i believe you will do a perfect delivering in the funeral; well i know its not a perfect condition .. but i believe the Spirit of GOd is in you and the Holy Spirit is working with you to comfort the rest of the family. I believe it!!

    See you soon someday sometimes.
    Cheers,
