If you read yesterdays blog, then you know about the passing of my dear friend, Pastor Glenden Berg. Yesterday afternoon, I was contacted by Carolyn Berg (Glenden’s wife) about doing the service… and I proudly accepted her invitation. Please pray for me, that I will perfectly memorialize the life of this special man. The funeral service is on Thursday, July 1, at 1pm… at the Moorefield WVA Church of God. For more info, you can go to the Shaffer Funeral Home website.

Will You Be The Doctor?
Later, as Jesus left the town, he saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him.
So Levi got up, left everything, and followed him.
Later, Levi held a banquet in his home with Jesus as the guest of honor.
Many of Levi’s fellow tax collectors and other guests also ate with them.
But the Pharisees and their teachers of religious law complained bitterly to Jesus’ disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with such scum?”
Jesus answered them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.”
As a Jewish tax collector, Levi was considered the scum of the earth. He was employed by the Roman government to collect taxes from his own people… and as a perk of this heartless job, Jewish tax collectors were allowed to collect more than Rome required and keep the extra for themselves. These tax collectors were betrayers and thieves of their own people. They were hated by pretty much everyone.
So, it isn’t surprising that everyone reacted as they did when Jesus invited this low life to follow him (especially as one of his infamous 12 disciples). Levi left everything to accept this invitation from Jesus… a sign that he recognized his need for change and he was finished with his sinful life. The banquet Matthew held in Jesus honor is further evidence of my claim.
Matthew was a grateful man! He was obviously transformed by love and mercy he was shown! At the banquet, Matthew hosted his fellow tax collectors and other guests… a crowd of people who were utterly despised by the teachers of the religious law.
So, the religious leaders complained bitterly to Jesus saying, “Why do you eat and drink with such scum?”
And Jesus shocked them with His perfect reply, just as He still shocks so many people in todays society. Jesus said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.”
How true this is! And yet, for some reason, we still try to spend our lives as far away from sick people as we can get. This fallen world is crying for a doctor, the sick people are everywhere.
Today, I’m praying for the 21st century Christian Church… that we will catch a heart for the sickest people (a heart just like Jesus had for them)… that we will run to the lowliest places of our world… that we will invite the scum of the earth to our special banquets… that we will lay our lives down, to heal them, just like Jesus modeled this for us.
No wonder we call Jesus, the Great Physician! This He is!

I pray you all a most triumphant day! With much love…
