For the past two days (early morning), I’ve been praying in the DFC sanctuary with Ricky Lee Wade and Betty Dorondo. Early morning prayer, worship, bible meditation, and journaling… the greatest and longest running routine of my life. Without it, I would not have the impact I’m having today.
For the past 20 years, I’ve spent more time in direct conversation with God than any other human, including my own best friend and wife, Emily Balsamo.
I know this is hard to believe, but it is true. Prayer is not a chore for this guy. I talk with God so much, sometimes I wonder if I might be out of my mind. More than that, He actually talks back to me! He speaks to me from the pages of the Bible… and through inward spiritual impressions, and messages I can hear in my mind. A few times, He has spoken to me with an audible voice. No, I’m not schizophrenic and I’m not one to wander through town waiting for instructions about which direction I should turn at traffic lights.
And no, I’m not a socially handicapped individual. I think if you ask around, you will find that I interact with people as well as it can be done! I have many friends and I am the friend to many. I have rich friends and poor friends, young friends and old friends, black friends and white friends… friends in the church and friends outside of the church.
You don’t have to become a creepy hermit to WALK WITH GOD.
(By the way, I love todays photo! I really don’t think that guy is a “creepy hermit,” but I didn’t have the time to search for a better image.)
In this age, many people are fearful about getting too close to God. They keep a safe distance because they are afraid about how they may be perceived by the modern world. Because so much harm has been done in the name of “God said,” many seem unwilling to listen for God’s direction.
The way of character is the will of God. Certainly, the very first voice we want to hear from God is the voice of His written Word (the Bible). Since God will never speak a message or give a direction that is contrary to His revealed will (the Bible), we must create a spiritual compass by internalizing the bible. Christians should read through the Bible once every year by reading 4 chapters per day! This is the easiest and surest way of hearing and knowing God’s will.
Besides the Bible, Christians should learn how to fellowship with God in prayer and worship. King David was addicted to God’s PRESENCE and so should we.
The thoughts of this blog come from one of my all time favorite Psalms. I read it this morning and it set me on fire… as it always does! Enjoy it: Psalm 84:1-4 NLT
How lovely is your dwelling place,
O Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
I long, yes, I faint with longing
to enter the courts of the Lord.
With my whole being, body and soul,
I will shout joyfully to the living God.
Even the sparrow finds a home,
and the swallow builds her nest and raises her young
at a place near your altar,
O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, my King and my God!
What joy for those who can live in your house,
always singing your praises.
King David is known as the man after God’s own heart. David still remains, the greatest worshiper of all time. He was addicted to the written scriptures. He was addicted to fellowship with God through prayer and worship. David was not a creepy hermit. On the contrary, he was the most influential and beloved man of his era… and one of the most influential and beloved people in Biblical history!
Here is my prayer this morning:
Dear God, make me a King David in the modern world! Give my friends and me the HEART of David, the heart of prayer and worship. May we adore your dwelling place and faint with longing to enter the courts of the Lord! Let us know the joy of those who live in your house, always singing your praises!
It’s radical… I hope you love it!
