Countdown: 2 days 2 impact!

I’ve never said that phrase and meant it more than I do right now.

After 5 years of writing and 9 months in the publishing process, I will hold Make Me A Legend in my hands for the very first time TODAY!

As you might know, we’re picking up the first 5000 pre-release copies (1000 hardcover and 4000 paperback) from the publisher’s headquarters in Shippinsburg PA at approximately 2pm this afternoon.

Our life long friend Kevin Huffer is hauling the shipment for us… accompanied by Emily (my wife), Heaven (my daughter), and me (of course). We’re leaving at 9am, picking up the order between 12noon and 3pm, and returning home between 3 and 6 tonight. Then we’re moving the books from their 3 pallets to a storage room… they’re packaged in 128 boxes of 40 books each. Then, I will begin signing hundreds of books from Friday evening until I fall asleep on Saturday night.

Make Me A Legend

Chapter 11: Celebrate Your Progress

(10 pages into the chapter)

Celebrate God’s Help

I can’t describe to you how excited I get every time a professional football player scores a touchdown, and then kneels in the end zone, so the whole world knows, “I am only great because I kneel to my Father in Heaven.” It is a beautiful thing when triumphant humans deflect their honors to God.

What does it look like when you and I score touchdowns? How do we normally handle our ten seconds of fame? Do we tend to drink down our pitchers of exaltation like we are self-made people? It is way too easy to feel this way, isn’t it? After all, we have worked so hard and sacrificed so much, and we have earned the right to gloat—haven’t we?

This is not what I meant when I asked you to love you yourself outrageously. While I want you to become your own best fan, love yourself outrageously, stay away from the tabloids, and better recognize and celebrate your incremental progress—you must remember that every good and perfect gift comes from above (see James 1:17). You are only great because you are the creation of God’s great love!

In his book Folk Psalms of Faith, Ray Stedman tells a story that illustrates my point perfectly.

Harry A. Ironside was a Canadian-American Bible teacher, preacher, pastor, and author in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One day he was sitting at a table in a crowded restaurant. Just as Ironside was about to begin his meal, a man approached and asked if he could join him. Ironside invited him to have a seat. Then, as was his custom, Ironside bowed his head in prayer. When he opened his eyes, the other man asked, “Do you have a headache?” Ironside replied, “No, I don’t.” The other man asked, “Well, is there something wrong with your food?” Ironside replied, “No, I was simply thanking God as I always do before I eat.” The man said, “Oh, you’re one of those, are you? Well, I want you to know I never give thanks. I earn my money by the sweat of my brow and I don’t have to give thanks to anybody when I eat. I just start right in!” Ironside said, “Yes, you’re just like my dog. That’s what he does, too!”

We are not self-made people. Therefore, none of us should ever give an acceptance speech without exposing the invisible cause behind our manifested effects. For the rest of our lives, we should gracefully redirect every round of applause sent our way, giving it back to the God who makes us worthy of such honors. Oh, for a new world of humble, grateful people—each one pausing, kneeling, and pointing upward in our end zones every time we score! Here is what the prophet Moses had to say about this topic:

When you have eaten your fill, be sure to praise the Lord your God for the good land He has given you. But that is the time to be careful! Beware that in your plenty you do not forget the Lord your God and disobey His commands, regulations, and decrees that I am giving you today. For when you have become full and prosperous and have built fine homes to live in, and when your flocks and herds have become very large and your silver and gold have multiplied along with everything else, be careful! Do not become proud at that time and forget the Lord your God, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt. Do not forget that He led you through the great and terrifying wilderness with its poisonous snakes and scorpions, where it was so hot and dry. He gave you water from the rock! He fed you with manna in the wilderness, a food unknown to your ancestors. He did this to humble you and test you for your own good. He did all this so you would never say to yourself, “I have achieved this wealth with my own strength and energy” (Deuteronomy 8:10-17).

I will never forget.

When my life is over, I only desire one special designation from God. As He takes me by the hand and leads me through the highlights of my earthly pilgrimage, I want Him to nominate me for His very own “frenzied fans” hall of fame! I want my heavenly Father to look back over every era from Adam and Eve to the end of the world, and say, “That Chuck Balsamo was one of My greatest fans of all time!”

Even though we live in a world that mostly frowns on frenzied worship, I am willing to stand alone when necessary, to be for God, His one man mob of maniac fans! Without Him, I would be divorced, deadbeat, and lying desolate in the dark corner of a jail cell today—that is the truth! I want to celebrate Him with the resonance of a thousand choirs. If I thought He would appreciate it, I would gladly bare my naked belly all painted up with His favorite colors, and I would rave His name in sub-zero temperatures for the rest of my time on earth.
