God: I Have Chosen You Because Of Your Heart

Hey Everyone!

Last night in prayer meeting, I read from 2 Samuel 15 & 16. King Saul had disqualified himself as God’s first appointed King of Israel… so God commanded His prophet (Samuel) to fill a ram’s horn with oil… and go pour that oil (representing the Holy Spirit) on Kings Saul’s replacement (David, son of Jesse). Here are a few key verses from this story…

Samuel never went to meet with Saul again, but he mourned constantly for him. And the Lord was sorry he had ever made Saul king of Israel. (1 Samuel 15:35 NLT)

Now the Lord said to Samuel, “You have mourned long enough for Saul. I have rejected him as king of Israel, so fill your flask with olive oil and go to Bethlehem. Find a man named Jesse who lives there, for I have selected one of his sons to be my king.” (1 Samule 16:1 NLT)

When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, “Surely this is the Lord’s anointed!” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:6-7 NLT)

So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah. (1 Samuel 16:13 NLT)

After I read those verses, God spoke to me. Really, He did!

Here is what God said to me, “Many who were great yesterday will not be great tomorrow. I am the Lord who promotes specific people at specific times for my eternal purposes. Just as I was sorry for ever appointing Saul as King, I am sorry for appointing many leaders who have gone astray in this hour. My horn is filled with oil and I am looking for David! I am not looking for people with outward beauty or extra-special talent, but I am selecting people with right thoughts and intentions. People with HEART!”

Then He honestly said to me, “Chuck, I have chosen you because of your HEART. In their own pride, others have disqualified you because of reasons that didn’t matter to me. You have been through the fire and you’ve come out with your HEART intact. You still care about people. You still love me in the rarest way, compared with many people from your generation. You still have faith. You still have humility. You still have love, and compassion. Therefore, I am pouring my oil on you… and the difference will be noticed by everyone! The Spirit of God will come upon you more than before. This is my promise to you this night!”

Dear friends, this promise to me is also an open promise to others who have been through the fires of life, but still have God’s HEART. Stop complaining about all the years that have passed you by. Guard your HEART. Don’t misinterpret the times of testing, Don’t become bitter with the people who have misunderstood you and misrepresented you. If you guard your HEART, and God pours His oil over you, there is nothing and no person who will ever be able to keep you from becoming what God has promised to MAKE YOU.

This is cause for celebration! Think about it, add your comments, and invite your friends to join the discussion.

  1. Pastor Chuck,
I haven’t visited your blog in a long time. Love this entry. When I first read it, the thought that rose up in me was, “Lord, please give us a Samuel who can go and find the David You desire as leader for this country!” I pray we all cry out for that, so we can know with certainty who is to be our leader, a president, who has a heart for God.
Thanks for the encouraging word to guard our hearts. Good word.

    • Which Michelle is this? I can’t tell from your email address. lol

Michelle, even though I have been praying like never in my life for this next presidential election… I didn’t write this message with a political mindedness. WOW, when I read your comment, something shot through me, like, “Chuck, your message had more dimensions that you knew when you wrote it!”

Thank you Michelle. Powerful perspective you have given. Have a beautiful Friday!

      • Ha ha…. has it been so long since I last commented on your blog, that you don’t remember me? Jeepers! I need to visit this place more often! I’m Michelle Knoll from Waynesboro. Ring a bell?
You keep praying for this election, Pastor Chuck. And keep your congregation fired up about praying for it, and encourage them to keep negative comments out of their speech concerning the candidates. With all the media yuck out there, it’s not going to be easy to keep our attitudes pure concerning the election or the people involved, but God is up to something big and He’s working in this. I sense it in my spirit. Also, I have read some things about the significance of certain numbers in Biblical terms, and the number 12 has an interesting meaning: “governmental perfection.” We need to join with God in agreement that our government will be made right in this year! Amen, and amen! Speak it, Tell your congregation to speak it, and watch what God will do!
        Blessings to you and yours!

        • Michelle, of course I remember you! One of my greatest blog friends of all time! But, you’ve commented with a different email address, so wordpress didn’t recognize your profile. 🙂

I agree with you about the up coming election. This is (in my opinion), the most important election of our lifetime… one of the most important elections of all time for this nation. God be with us… and help us to choose His man. 🙂

  2. We live in a time when we need to concentrate on the things that really matter, like our individual relationship(s) with God and not so much on what others will think if we value God more than Man. See, unknowingly we have “enabled” others to get closer to Man for one of many reasons. That, in the end,we may have inadvertingly made God “jealous” rather than smile for the things we said, thought, felt or reacted to another’s action or reaction. So, like mentioned aboved, if we have chosen God to put Him first because of the purity and unconditional(ness) of His heart, we need to treat Him like He treats us by giving Him our undivided atttention and incline our ears without omitting, dismissing or altering what He says to us. Obviously, this is all easier said than done, but we can at least start with one thing: making Him feel less “jealous” in our relationship with Him…surely, if we are “in love” with God, we do not need to hide the very fact that we are…being in love is one thing, staying in love, is another…so, let’s take the time to rekindle the flames periodically and not let it become a chore on our list of things to do…after all, it’s us who have a debt of praise, not Him.

  3. Pastor, I had seen your fb post but had not read your blog yet and I was on youtube looking for Beth Moore’s newest bible study promo. I started watching several of her little mini sermons cause I just love her stuff! One in particular I really liked and wanted to post to my wall but it has something to do with the heart too so I thought hmm. I better read Pastors blog first to make sure it doesnt look like I am back talking you or anything. (you know how things can appear sometimes unattentionally of course) So when I read your blog I realized oh my! Its in the same vein!! So cool! So now I will post her mini clip. I love how God speaks!!

  4. “Stop complaining about all the years that have passed you by.” I’m guilty of this. Not necessarily about things I did not do, or things that did not happen. I often find myself complaining that my walk is not like it was the first several years I became a Christian – if only I was as on fire as then, why can’t I feel like i did back then, etc.

When I read that sentence, I immediately thought that I need to stop complaining about the way it was, and focus on the way it is now and improving and growing in my relationship with the Lord. If I keep focusing on the past, I’ll never live today.

    • Shelley, that’s what I love about the NEW YEAR. Every 12 months, we have a chance to reinvent ourselves, as the rest of the world does the same. Maybe “rediscover” is a better term. Or maybe “refocus.” Either way, this is a natural time of the year to wrestle with God about the meaning of our lives… to see Him more clearly that we have before. Have you ever gone through my Life Management System? Click the top link titled, “Your 2012 Life Plan.” I’m praying for you this morning.

I posted a status update yesterday...

Sometimes, inner turmoil & confusion is not an attack from “satan,” but a God-initiated quest for something new, the process of innovation!

      Then I explained the thought

The confusion comes from the collision of our wishes and desires with His will for our lives.

Just like Jacob felt when he wrestled with the angel for a transformation of his character.

God initiates within us, a strong desire for change… a desire that violently collides with who we are.

This collision is the dissonance I speak of here. Oftentimes, we fell like we’re under some kind of spiritual attack. We wonder, “Why is this happening to me?” We want it to stop.

But without this conflict, and the discomfort it creates, we will never experience the breakthrough God is calling us into.

This is why I call it “A God-initiated quest for something new, the process of innovation.”

I hope this helps, have a great weekend!

  5. “Don’t become bitter with the people who have misunderstood you and misrepresented you.” You are so right on about this. When we become bitter with people we shut off a part of our relationship with God and we don’t want that. Thanks for the reminder for this new year.

  6. Love this message!! God just ignited a fire in my spirit last week to start a new series and my second book on escaping boredom in Christianity!! So excited to see what God has in store. He truly looks at our hearts and our motives. All I want to do is speak His Words. Thank you for being an inspiration to me, and thank you for finally getting a “Subcribe” button on your website, lol! I didn’t see one before and meant to ask you. I love your posts, but I always forget to go to your website to read them. Now I have no excuse:)

I may message you soon to ask if I can use a quote from your book in my book, if that’s okay? I’m not sure which one yet. You have so many great messages that relate to keeping that fire burning inside us.

Can’t wait to see what God has in store for you! Blessings to you:)

    • To be quoted by Amanda Beth, a high honor! Amanda, really I believe that you will be a best selling author someday. Keep writing, your difference is felt throughout the world… it’s changing our lives, making us better people. 🙂

  7. Chuck, this is an awesome post! In many cases the Lord uses the weakest of the weak, the ones least among the rest, because it will bring Him the glory. Some, like Saul, who are already head and shoulders above the rest, may be more inclined to take credit for the accomplishments that God allows. There are obviously exceptions, of course.

The other thing that came to mind when I was reading is how David remained respectful of Saul while he was in power, and even after his death, because he knew Saul was appointed by God. Sometimes we look at leaders who we disagree with and talk about them negatively or disrespectfully. We need to be careful how quickly we speak against God’s anointed.

Thanks again for the great post!

  8. Fantastic goods from you, man. I have understand your stuff previous to and you are just too fantastic. I really like what you’ve acquired here, really like what you’re stating and the way in which you say it. You make it enjoyable and you still take care of to keep it smart. I can’t wait to read much more from you. This is actually a tremendous website.
