The Bible: Not A Book – It Is A Living, Speaking Voice

I will begin todays message with this great quote…

When you read God’s Word, you must constantly be saying to yourself, “It is talking to me, and about me.”
(Soren Kierkegaard, 1813–1855 Danish philosopher, theologian, poet, social critic, and religious author)

People have asked me, how can you read from the same “book” every day for more than 20 years. “Surely you must know the message by now,” they say.

Yes, I do know the message by now. Yes, I do have many scriptures memorized and I can find any verse without the use of a concordance.

But…

The Bible is MORE THAN a static message carried to the future on parchments locked in glass cases.

The Bible is MORE THAN black and red ink on white pages (and digital letters on smart phones).

Some people consider us crazy for basing our whole lives on a “book” from ancient H I S T O R Y.

But it doesn’t really matter when the Bible was written, because the Bible is T I M E L E S S.

The Bible is not a book. It is a living, speaking V O I C E.

Though it was written to all people in all times, and it is general concerning all issues of life… there is a proceeding voice which flies from Its pages when It is read.

The Bible is a G O D portal. It is a window though which God may be released into your atmosphere!

This is why I read from it E V E R Y day.

Though I follow a methodical system for reading the Bible, and I search out certain topics, and I study for the messages I share with others… oftentimes, it doesn’t really matter which book or chapter I select… because somehow, God always whispers from the general sections, a specific conversation with me.

This is not true for all people. There is a stipulation.

The Bible IS just a book to you, until the second you give your life to Christ.

The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. (1 Corinthians 2:14 NIV)

Before I gave my life to Christ, I tried to read from the Bible once… and it was painful. I did not understand a single word.

Then (at rock bottom) on February 17, 1991 when I let God all the way into my life… I opened the Bible and THE VOICE was there!

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. (Hebrews 4:12 NLT)

This is why I read from it E V E R Y  D A Y.

Your thoughts?

Dream Big,

Chuck

  1. I was just talking to a gentlemen the other day about this! It is amazing how the same stories have different, yet always powerful, lessons for our lives. Great word Brother!
Also love the “God Portal”…I will have to use that 🙂

  2. Hey Chuck,
I agree with you on what the Bible is. As Christians it also reminds us of who we are and our home. I think it is vitally important to remain in the Word everyday or else we can believe lies about God or lies about ourselves and get easily swept up in the world or with ourself. I read the Bible everyday and I seem to learn something new as well, regardless of how many pages are highlighted or rephrased..

  3. The Bible begins with God speaking… His speech the creative energy of all that is (Genesis 1 and 2). God-breathed and powered by His Spirit, it indeed requires a regenerated mind to receive it. You have captured essential truth here!

  4. It’s my roadmap, sustanance, my food, for my very existance, in all realms of my life……with out it, I’d be dead….

  5. During, my RCIA (the year long discipleship required to become Catholic), they talked a lot about the Holy Scriptures. We view it as a volume of many books, not just one book. But it is a treasure that the Church canonized and protected for its 2000 year old history. Below are a few great quotes. I prayer they bless someone today. Peace

Ignorance of scripture is ignorance of Christ — St. Jerome

If you believe what you like in the gospels, and reject what you don’t like, it is not the gospel you believe, but yourself. – St. Augustine

The Holy Bible is like a mirror before our mind’s eye. In it we see our inner face. From the Scriptures we can learn our spiritual deformities and beauties. And there too we discover the progress we are making and how far we are from perfection. – Pope St. Gregory

“Learn the heart of God from the word of God” & “The Bible is a letter from Almighty God to His creatures.” & “Holy Scripture by the manner of its language transcends every science, because in one and the same sentence, while it describes a fact, it reveals a mystery.”– Pope St. Gregory

  6. In addition to the guidance that the scriptures provide to us on a daily basis, the validity and authority of the scriptures is proven in many ways: They passes all scientific, prophetic and archeological tests: so we weren’t shocked or surprised when Egyptian chariots were found at the bottom of the Red Sea a few years ago, or that brinks in Egypt have been found without straw. And while there is no such thing as a perfect translation, the original manuscripts are indeed divinely inspired by our Creator.

  7. I saw you at Dayton Days and you mentioned for me to leave my address for you to send me your book – I am not real computer savvy – my address is 128 Weller Pond Lane, Mt. Sidney, VA 24467.
Thank you as the Lord continues to bless you
and use your prophetic voice that directs others
    and helps them stay true
to pursue what the Lord has for them to do.

  8. Pastor, I loved this post – I shared it on my FaceBook page. Thanks for the reminder that his awesome Book
is not just for reading – but for living and breathing.
